Life Coach FAQs

WHAT IS COACHING?

According to the International Coach Federation (ICF), professional coaching is an ongoing professional relationship that helps people produce extraordinary results in their lives, careers, businesses or organizations. Through the thought provoking and creative process of coaching, clients deepen their learning, are inspired to maximize their personal and professional potential, improve their performance, and enhance their quality of life.

WHAT IS A LIFE COACH?

A Life Coach helps an individual, group or professional organization achieve goals that they would not otherwise have been able to.

WHAT IS A CERTIFIED LIFE COACH?

A certified Life Coach has completed an IFC approved Life Coach course.  The IFC is a nonprofit organization formed by individual members who are professionals who practice coaching, including Executive Coaches, Leadership Coaches, Life Coaches, and many more, from around the world.

Formed in 1995, today the ICF is the leading global organization, with over 16,000 members, dedicated to advancing the coaching profession by setting high professional standards, providing independent certification, and building a network of credentialed coaches. The IFC exists to support and advance the coaching profession through programs and standards supported by our members and to be an authoritative source on coaching information and research for the public.

HOW IS COACHING DIFFERENT FROM COUNSELING?

A coach is NOT a therapist, a psychologist, a counselor or someone who specializes in mental illness. As a general rule, coaching deals with the present/future and therapy deals with the pain of the past.  If a client is mentally ill, but is stable (and dealing with other professionals) then coaching may be beneficial to this person. Coaching focuses on the present and the future of the client’s life. All the answers are inside our clients, and a coach will help them tap into them. This is a learned process.

HOW DOES COACHING WORK?

In each meeting, the client chooses the focus of conversation, while the coach listens and contributes observations and questions. This interaction creates clarity and moves the client into action. Coaching accelerates the client’s progress by providing greater focus and awareness of choice. Coaching concentrates on where clients are now and what they are willing to do to get where they want to be in the future.

WHERE IS COACHING DONE?

Coaching can be done in a variety of places and determined by the coach and client. It is often done over the telephone or via Skype with clients from all over the world.

HOW OFTEN ARE THE SESSONS?

Usually through three or four phone sessions a month over a defined period of time. Unlike therapy, goal oriented coaching usually has a specified end. The typical session lasts 45 minutes.

WHO IS A TYPICAL COACHING CLIENT?

Coaching client is an individual who is mentally stable who has sought out assistance with achieving their goals.

HOW MUCH DOES COACHING COST?

The cost will vary from place to place, but generally average about $100/per session.
